Leather Bands Have Lasting Appeal

leather-watch-bandsIn recent years, leather watch bands have fallen out of favor with fashion gurus and the general public alike. They tend to wear down quickly if they are neglected, and even with proper care, they tend to stretch and crack easily. And while it may seem as if leather bands are quickly becoming antiquated, there are several reasons why they will continue to have appeal, if only to a small group.

Unlike metal bands, leather watch bands allow you to easily alter the size of your watch. This is particularly handy for people who are on diets, as the size of your wrist often correlates with your weight. One of the main draws of the metal band is its opulent appearance; by contrast, a leather band can help your achieve an understated look, which comes in handy when on vacation and attending events where you don’t want to attract attention.

Prepping for the Big Presentation

presentation-skills-traininWhen the company vice president chose me to make a presentation before the board of directors regarding our third-quarter earnings report, I was more than a little nervous. I knew right off the bat that I would need to rehearse enough to refresh my dormant public speaking skills. Beyond that, I would need to exchange my business casual look for a full-on high-powered professional wardrobe.

I tried on a number of power suits, eventually settling on a fetching pinstripe number. Then I picked out some wingtips and gold cufflinks to really convey the message that I’m a team player and an asset to the corporation. Still, it seemed like something was missing. It took me a moment to realize that I needed one of those impressive men’s watches with leather watch straps I had noticed online a few days before. A classy watch would truly complete the look.

bandsToday people are going to the internet to buy everything from ballpoint pens to million dollar homes. While the internet can be a convenient and affordable method for making purchases, it is nearly impossible to gauge the appropriate size of an item of clothing or an accessory with trying it on. The sizes of items like shoes and shirts vary by designer, making it nearly impossible to be certain of your purchase.

Luckily, there is a uniform method employed by watchmakers when sizing watch bands. The width measurement is always recorded in millimeters and should match the size of the face. The length of the band is also measured in millimeters and excludes the buckle. A lady’s band is typically 6-15mm, while a man’s is 16mm and up.

watch-strapsWhen choosing a new watch, the most important aspect is obviously the design and craftsmanship of the time keeping mechanism. Be sure to opt for an aesthetically pleasing piece that will be appropriate for a wide range of occasions. It is also vital to choose a face that it the correct size for your wrist; too big of a face will dwarf your wrist and look bulky, while one too small will look like a children’s timepiece.

On your watch hunt ignore the manufacturers bands completely. There are a variety of watch straps made of nearly every material imaginable that can easily be attached to any face. Changing the band can have a big impact on the overall appearance of your timepiece, so it is best to mix and match to your taste.

l_leabrade3001I have a friend who is allergic to metals, which makes it difficult for him to choose watch bands that don’t cause him to break out a rash. I tried wearing leather watch bands however the metal in the watch base still caused a reaction.

I offered to help my friend find a watch band that would not cause allergic reaction. To my surprise there are many different materials that can be used to comfortably keep a watch on your wrist. After doing some shopping around we found the perfect leather watch band that did not cause any irritation to his skin. With the proper research it shouldn’t be to difficult to find one that works with your skin.

The Routine Grounder

replacement-watch-bandsI knew it was a terrible idea, but I took the risk anyway. I’m referring of course to the hare-brained decision to continue wearing my watch while playing a game of catch with my daughter. She’s getting ready to try out for the softball team, so we generally spend at least an hour each evening tossing the ball around the backyard. The fact that I have a baseball glove rather than a softball mitt probably didn’t help matters.

Stooping down to field a routine ground ball, I noticed that the ball was taking a funny hop off the turf. Before I could adjust to the ball, I heard a distinctive cracking sound – my watch band had broken in two pieces. I immediately went online seeking replacement watch bands and decided to opt for a leather strap that lends itself to active use. I was right back in the game the very next day.
