A Family Heirloom
My dad’s never been one for sentimentality, but I’ll never forget when he pulled me into his office on my sixteenth birthday. Usually a trip in there meant I had committed some sinful act that required reprimanding, so naturally I was expecting the worst. When I walked in the room, however, my dad didn’t look a bit perturbed and my anxieties eased. He brought me over to his desk and pulled out a gold pocket watch.
The thing was beaten and battered, and I had no idea what to think. My dad went on to explain that he and his father had both brought the watch with them while they were fighting in overseas. He told me that the watch was now mine, and I remember feeling overwhelmed. Since it was in pretty bad condition, I went online and purchased some clock pocket watch parts to fix it up. My dad couldn’t believe it when I showed him the watch, completely refurbished and running like new.
